LOL

I just changed from XP to Ubuntu ("Niiiiiiiiiiice!" as Borat would say) and I needed a wallpaper for my screen so I go to MSG, In the Paint and set the team picture to my background.

They advertise themselves "as inside as you can get". So there sitting in the front row is Larry Brown. You can't make it up.

Jaq,

Ubuntu is the latest and greatest Linux offering and what I did was bought The Official Ubuntu Book at B&N which comes with an installation DVD.

Before Christnmas I bought a new disk drive cheap (Staples has some great prices this week as well.

I shut down and unplugged my computer, disconnected my XP drive so as not to screw something up and added the new disk (unformatted) to the computer.

Fire up the machine with the DVD in the DVD drive and follow the installation instructions - better than Vista. It installed, found my internet connections for firefox, added Office and GIMP (which I'll make a New York Knicks logo with) and it is Sooooooooooooo good.

Now I'm setting up a dual boot machine. My kids still need word for a couple of years but once they're done, it's Linux all the way. Beautiful stuff, no kidding.

So your saying I could install it while I have Xp or did you uninstall xp and install ubuntu.

Jaq,

If you have a big enough hard disk you can repartition it into spaces for two operating systems. I did this years ago with a Linux version called Mandrake which worked fine. (But it is very risky for a novice. However, I've also lost hard drives so today I buy separate hard drives for separate operating systems.

For example you could put Ubuntu on a portable drive and boot from it when you choose.

For me, Windows has become a bigger expense than it is worth. I mostly use a browser and Google tools. Hard to justify the headaches associated with Vista's appetite for new hardware and the like.

So to answer your question, you can leave XP where it is AND add a second drive that boots to Ubuntu. When you start the machine you can tell it which way to boot.

Some online vendors sell hard drives with Ubuntu pre-installed. All you do is plug them in and set preferences. Minor differences in the user experience really.

Here, dear readers, is the final resting place of all weary Knicks fans. Yes, here is where one comes when the Triangle refuses to have three sides, when biting one's lip from losing to win later is one loss too far,or when said fan simply hits 'rock' bottom. In short, "the ship be" eternally "sinking" here. Welcome aboard, rearrange the deck chairs as you please.
